In the intellectual history of Iran, the 8th century AH marks a period when the religious boundaries between Sunnism and Shi'ism underwent transformation within the context of mystical movements. This study primarily aims to elucidate how Shah Ni'matullah Wali (731–834 AH) navigated this religious dichotomy and to analyze his functional role within socio-intellectual currents; this is significant because, while his lineage of masters and written works align with Sunni jurisprudence and theology, later sources associated with his order attribute Shi'i leanings to him. Accordingly, the central research questions are: What discursive functions in Shah Ni'matullah Wali’s works led to the synthesis of Sunni and Shi'i elements? And how did the Ni'matullahi order play a mediating role in Iran’s intellectual transition to the Safavid era? This research employs a historical method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that the religious ambiguity found in Shah Ni'matullah Wali’s works was not the result of indifference but served a practical function in mitigating sectarian tensions. Evident in his writings are symbolic elements such as the redefinition of shared concepts—particularly the highlighting of Imam Ali’s (AS) status—simultaneous respect for the jurisprudential authorities of both sects, and an emphasis on eschatological ideals like Mahdism. These symbolic actions positioned the Ni'matullahi order—alongside other syncretic Sufi movements—as an indirect contributor to the groundwork that facilitated the official adoption of Imami Shi'ism during the Safavid era.
