Abdullah ibn Ja’far ibn Abi Talib is one of the prominent figures of early Islam who has been noted in historical sources due to his family ties with the Ahl al-Bayt and his presence during the caliphate of Imam Ali. This study, using a descriptive-analytical method and considering the social structure of the Arab tribe in the first century AH, attempts to examine Abdullah’s position in the political and military decision-making processes of the Alawi Caliphate and his political positions until the Ashura uprising. Although Abdullah played an effective role in supporting Imam Ali in some cases, there are points of ambiguity and doubts about the degree of independence of his vote, the quality of his military participation, and his proximity to the power structure after Imam Ali. A balanced evaluation of the narratives about him can help to provide a more accurate understanding of the position of the elite in the political history of Islam.
The findings indicate that Abdullah's participation in the political and military arenas of the Alawi Caliphate, especially in the battles of Jamal and Siffin, was not only due to religious beliefs, but more importantly, his duties and tribal ties within the framework of the Banu Hashim dynasty. Also, his relative silence towards the Umayyad Caliphate and his cautious behavior after the martyrdom of Imam Ali and indirect support for the Ahl al-Bayt in the Karbala movement can be analyzed as a strategy for survival in the power structure and an attempt to maintain his tribal position.
